Abstract
Objective: This study investigated the characteristics of social cognition in relation to neurocognition and functional outcomes in schizophrenia patients.

Methods: Three social cognition tests were used in this study: the Theory of Mind (ToM) test, the Social Behavioral Sequencing Test (SBST), and the Facial Affect Identification Test (FAIT). The social cognition tests, neurocognitive tests, and the Social Role Functioning Scale were applied to 42 patients with schizophrenia. Correlation analyses were conducted to evaluate the relationships among social cognition variables, neurocognitive variables, and functional outcome variables.

Results: The social cognition variables were significantly correlated with each other but their correlations with subscales showed somewhat different patterns. In addition, the ToM was not correlated with any of the neurocognitive tests, while SBST and FAIT were significantly correlated with some of the neurocognitive test measures. Correlation analysis between social cognition and functional outcome variables revealed that the ToM test and SBST were significantly correlated with the functional outcome scales, but that FAIT was not. The strength of correlations between neurocognition and functional outcome variables was inconsistent.

Conclusion: Social cognition tests have different strengths of correlation with neurocognition and functional outcomes. The ToM test appears to be less influenced by neurocognition, while the SBST appears to be integrated with, and greatly affected by neurocognition in predicting functional outcome.
